Trips & ETA

BRYKK detects when family members start driving, calculates real-time ETAs, and shows live trip progress on your lock screen — all without anyone tapping anything.

Two ways trips start

A trip can start two ways:

  • Manual— tap the search bar at the top of the map and type or pick a destination, then tap “Go.” This sets the destination explicitly so the family knows exactly where you're headed.
  • Automatic— BRYKK detects driving via motion sensors, GPS speed, and CarPlay/Bluetooth audio routing. If you start driving without setting a destination, BRYKK marks it as “On the road” and shows a live activity for any family members whose phones are tracking your speed.

Going Home — the most common trip

From the map, tap “Where are you headed?” → tap “Home” from the suggestions. BRYKK immediately:

  • Sets the trip destination locally on your phone
  • Pushes the trip to CloudKit so family sees it within seconds
  • Starts your Live Activity so YOU see it on YOUR lock screen
  • Triggers the Coming Home alert on every family member who's at Home
  • Begins ETA recalculation as you drive

ETA accuracy

ETAs come from Apple Maps, which factors in real-time traffic. BRYKK recalculates every few seconds while you're driving. As traffic improves or worsens, the ETA updates everywhere it's displayed.

Live Activities on the lock screen

When a family member is driving, every other family member sees a Live Activity on their lock screen and Dynamic Island showing:

  • Their photo + name
  • Current speed
  • ETA in minutes
  • Destination name
  • Progress bar from start to destination
  • Weather at the destination

Tap the Live Activity to open BRYKK directly to that family member's detail view.

Trip in a dead zone

If a family member drives through an area with no cell signal, BRYKK keeps tracking locally and queues all updates. When signal returns, everything bursts to CloudKit at once and the family sees the catch-up. They never look “stuck” — BRYKK just shows the last known location with a small dead-zone indicator.

💡
BRYKK learns recurring dead zones (like that one tunnel on your commute) and stops alerting about them after the first detection. New dead zones still fire the “Sarah entered a dead zone” notification.

Ending a trip

A trip ends automatically when:

  • You arrive at the destination (within 150m of the saved place)
  • You arrive at any other saved place mid-trip
  • You park for 5+ minutes outside any saved place

You can also end a trip manually — tap your own pin on the map and hit “End Trip.” That clears the destination and stops the Live Activities everywhere.

Trip history

Every trip you take is logged with start time, end time, distance, route polyline, and average speed. View it under Settings → Family → Places & Trips → Trip History. Tap any trip to see the full route on a map. Premium users get unlimited history; free users get the last 10 trips.
